Interim Needs Packing & First Open Boxes

A first night moving essentials box should contain all the things you’ll need for the first night in, or in route, to your new home. This includes toiletries, a change of clothes, bedding, and any medications you may need. The last thing you will want after an exhausting move is to aimlessly search through boxes for your toothbrush when you’re ready to call it a day!

Make a list of the things you intend to pack in your essentials box well ahead of time. While packing your other items, you can add those things you might otherwise have forgotten. Review it several times while preparing for your move.

Depending on the timing of your move, you might have your things put in storage while your new home is completed, or your new rental becomes available. There are many reasons that you might be leaving your old home and must wait to move into your new one. In the meantime, most of your belongings will be in some type of temporary storage. Your first night moving essentials still need to be focused on that; but be sure to pack and label boxes that you will need to use during any interim period between homes.

To avoid such troubles, you’re advised to set aside all the items you use on a daily basis (toiletries, medicines, cell phone, laptop, jewelry, specialized kid and pet items, etc.) and the items you will want access to as soon as you arrive in your new home (bathroom essentials, bedding, change of clothes, basic food-preparation and food-serving utensils, etc.).

You will also want to have those items at hand that will speed up the unpacking process (hand tools) or that you may need in case of an emergency (first-aid kit, documents, etc.), and pack them in a separate “open-first box” that will stay with you at all times.

Preparing Your Essentials Box

  • Clearly mark your “essentials” box (or boxes): It’s a good idea to use a stand-out container for your first night essentials kit. Even if you are transporting your first-night kit yourself, you may have some other boxes in your car as well that you didn’t want on the moving truck (important documents, valuables, etc.) Using brightly colored packing tape or pack your essential items in a clear plastic bin to make them stand out from the other boxes.
  • Electronics: You’re not likely to forget your smartphone but be sure your air pods and charging devices are always at hand.
  • Clothes: Pajamas and a fresh change of clothes for the following day for each member of your family should be included. If you are move is long distance, you may be waiting days or weeks for everything to arrive. If this is the case, you can pack additional clothes in other boxes to transport in your car and unpack later. If you are flying, consider shipping them to yourself by U.P.S. or some other parcel service. [1]
  • Toiletries: Pack enough in your essentials box to last several days (until you receive your shipment or can make it to the store). Make your list by mentally walking through your (and your kids’) daily morning routine: shampoo, conditioner, hairbrushes, soap, lotion, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shaving items, and deodorant are all must-haves.
  • Shower curtain & towels: One of the first things you’ll want to do after an exhausting moving day is take a shower. If you’d like to avoid a flooded bathroom floor, folding up a shower curtain and stashing it in your container is helpful. Likewise, pack one or two wash cloths and towels to dry off after your first showers in your new home.
  • Toilet paper and/or baby wipes: These are an obvious necessity, but easy to overlook. Let’s be honest. Even if you have access to toilet paper, in many places what is available is about as handy as a Kleenex! Avoid an emergency trip to the convenience store immediately upon moving in by sticking a roll of toilet tissue in your essentials box.
  • Snacks: Pack non-perishable snacks like granola bars, crackers, cookies, or nuts.
  • Medications: After you arrive, you don’t want to rummage through boxes to find important medicines. Even if you are not on prescription drugs, don’t forget something like Advil or Tylenol for both adults and kids.
  • Miscellaneous must-haves: Makeup, reading glasses.
  • Don’t forget the weather: Make sure you consider the current weather conditions and the specific needs of every member of your family when preparing your survival box.) Keep that box away from your other boxes to avoid having it accidentally loaded on the moving truck – it must travel with you.
